Building G
From Staples High Wiki
Building G is the new building name for the area that contains the recently-renovated Library Media Center and Guidance Department. It was formerly the Eight building, which was partially demolished and the rest fully gutted. It opened to students following vacation on February 27, 2006.
For more information regarding the area, see Library and Guidance Department.
Construction work
Most of the Eight building was closed off to students on 18 February 2005, the day school let out for vacation. All that remained open was the hallway that ran by the radio station and into the old TV production lab. During that time, the abatement process started in all areas of the building, although for a week or so after vacation astute students actually cut through the building illegally (until a plywood wall was inserted to curb such actions). By late April, the Library was fully gutted, and demolitions occured in the classroom section of the building (on the other side of the old hallway from the Library, leaving the old Main Office wing and Library remaining. The section used for the Media Lab and Radio Station, as well as the hallway surrounding it was used until June. By the end of June, the Radio/Video rooms, and the hallway next to it closed for good.
Over the summer, discrepancies between the original structure and renovation plans greately slowed the process in the area. Additionally, mold abatement in the old library led to further slow-downs. The move was planned for the latter portion of November or some time in December; these obstacles combined together to push the move to February, as announced at the dawn of the 2005-2006 school year. A news entry on WestportNow mentioned that there were no guarantees of even a February move for the Library; however it was wrong.
