The Homework System, the predeccessor to the WLN, was designed to be integrated with Staples Online. Students would sign up for an account (providing their first and last names, a username, a password, and an e-mail address) and sign up for their classes; the system was not integrated with the school's databases like the WLN, so anyone could subscribe to any class, and in fact anyone could obtain a student account. Students were able to view their schedules (whatever they signed up for in the system), view their assignments, and organize them as New, Finished, or Old.

Teachers used a separate form to register, at the same time providing profile information for the Faculty section on Staples Online, and they had to have their accounts verified by the Computer Club before the information they posted was viewable by others. They would create their classes in the system, and could add assignments, specifying the date assigned, date due, and actual text of the assignment.

The system was created collaboratively by members of the Computer Club including Nathan Faber, Michael Mulligan, and Shant Vosgueritchian, and was completed in early 2000. The Computer Club got many science teachers to pilot the system, but before it got adopted too widely the Teacher's Center contracted Nathan and Shant to create the WLN.

The Homework System was originally reachable at hw.stapleshigh.net, homework.stapleshigh.net, and assignment.stapleshigh.net. When the WLN was launched, the first two were changed to point to the WLN, but the last was left pointing to the original system for historical reasons. Unfortunately, when Tron, which hosted the Homework System, was consolidated into the new Junker, the Homework System was not restored, and the Computer Club currently has no copy of the original code, nor is it sure if such a copy even exists anymore. However, the images used for the navigation buttons were hosted on Staples Online, as well as the images used by the help pages, so they provide what may be the only memories of the old system that started it all.
