History

For the structural history of the school, depicting the history of building constructions at the school, see Structural History of Staples High School

Staples High School was originally built in 1884 by Horace Staples. Mr. Staples was a wealthy business man who believed greatly in education. In 1866, Horace Staples offered a piece of land for Westport to build a school on. When the town denied his offer, Staples decided to have the school built himself. Opening on October 31, 1884, Staples High School was a three-story red brick building on Riverside Avenue located on the land now occupied by Saugatuck Elementary School. Beginning with 60 students who paid an annual tuition of $16 to $20, the school had one high school classroom, one grammar school classroom, a library and a laboratory. School lasted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On June 24, 1887, the first graduating class of six young women was handed the first Staples' diplomas. On July 1, 1903, control of Staples High School was transferred from Staples' estate to the Town of Westport. Fifty years after the first graduating class of six, 88 young men and women graduated. In 1958, Staples High School was moved to its current location on North Avenue in order to respond to the expanding needs of the community.

Renovations

The first expansion project came in 1937, which included a two-story building with classrooms. It is what is now the front of Saugatuck Elementary School.

Ten years after that, another expansion was built, including a Cafeteria and Gymnasium.

When the school moved to North Avenue in 1958, it consisted of seven seperate buildings labeled 1 through 8 (buildings 2 and 3 (Gym/Cafeteria) were together). In 1964, a two-story ninth building was constructed at the south end of the campus.

In 1974, heating pipe problems prompted a project to fix the system.

Internal Disputes

Theft of personal belongings are a large issue. iPods are amongest the favored items stolen. The theft rate does not seem to be falling. Authorities appear to be attempting to solve this problem, however it has not been fixed. TBA.

Internal Security

Staples is complete with an autonomous security force. Officially it consists of 2 people, however it has been known that other high ranking officials would help. In addition to that there are 2 main groups of the SIAS. The main purpose of the primary security force is to ensure two things within the Staples community, internal stability, and safety for its citizens. The Staples internal security force has a strong presence in terms of ground transportation, they can be quickly mobilized to deal with most problems. It has also been known that it will enlist the help of the guard at Bedford; however that is mostly for escaping students. Staples security focuses on a low technology base communications, short range radios for communication. This is however only the primary SIAS unit. There is a reserve unit of teachers and adminstrators that can be summoned, this is the second branch of the SIAS. This supplemental unit is part of the primary rapid reaction force. As part of the SIAS those well equipped, highly trained, professional reserves are of great importance to Staple's homeland security and other operations within Staples peripheral regions during a limited-scale, short period, and fast paced conflict.

Past Conflicts- During the wanning weeks of the 2005 senior class era, elements of the Staples Internal Autonomous Security (SIAS) were called upon to smash a revolt. At approximentaly 11:00, not long into first lunch, a crowd was gathered in the cafeteria like no other. Some 800 students were crowded around awating the brawl, some 400 of them cutting classes in the process. The students were hoping to pull the traditional prank, a food fight. In order to curb this threat, SIAS went for the assistance of PD. Togethor the SIAS and PD stopped the potentially messy situation. However some food was thrown, and the cafeteria was in immediate lock down. With the aid of a camera, SIAS members were able to enforce the law. Because of their rapid deployment, there have yet to be other major disturbances.
