Talk:Computer Club

I think that we should use this page to discuss various things involving the wiki. This way we don't have to use the news section of the main page or individual people's talk pages. Here we can talk about ideas we have, vote on those ideas, and I can post updates on the wiki's backend, it's settings, and it's progress. Hopefully we can make good use of this page. -- Jsherman 19:51, 23 Jun 2005 (EDT)
Project Idea: Alumni
The Staples website has been getting lots of e-mails about class reunions and the like lately, which normally is handled by an alumni website such as staplesalumni.org. Unfortunately, that website no longer seems to be online, and I have no clue why. One possible project idea for next year (once the wiki is running fairly smoothly, of course) is to make a new alumni section. The core wouldn't be too complex...listings, search by year, name, etc. And then it could be built on to have features making it easier to plan reunions and such. People would probably use it since it's a part of the actual school site (i.e. a subdomain of stapleshigh.net), and not one of those random ones out there. Any thoughts? <----- from Tom (sign your posts)
Sounds like a good idea, although it's hard to drum up support behind something current members won't be using until they're out of computer club. We'll discuss it at a meeting. --Brian Jordan 18:33, 1 March 2006 (EST)
New server names
If you have an idea for a name for the the Computer Club server, add a new comment here! --JSherman 15:38, 1 February 2006 (EST)
So... I'm just going to list off a few possibilites for names. Here they are:
- Junker- translated into another language
- faber
- lubinsoft
- serenity
- server
- it
- Jimmy
- IP Freely (sorry- the 7 year old inside of me couldn't resist)

So... does any one else have any ideas? --Mike Schneider 22:09, 10 February 2006 (EST)
My suggestion is calling the new server Junker, due to the fact that that's what we've done in the past when we get new hardware, our main server has been named Junker since computer club was founded, and we already own the domain (good luck getting Jimmy.org or Server.org ;)). --Brian Jordan 22:55, 17 February 2006 (EST)
tranya.org???
How about tranya.org? Tranya (if you don't know- I only found it after looking at a list of Sci Fi words as inspirtation for a new server name...- sorry, I really know nothing about sci fi... I have failed as a geek!) is a fiction drink from Star Trek. Not only is it a geeky refference, but it is short and sounds pretty cool. "I hope you relish it as much as I." --Mike Schneider 21:47, 1 March 2006 (EST)
Sounds too much like transvestite for my taste. --Brian Jordan 22:42, 1 March 2006 (EST)
I don't like it either...besides, other than being "geeky", what does it have to do with us? Junker has always been Junker through many different pieces of hardware, and through many operating systems...why should this time be any different? The only real difference is that we are getting brand new equipment, like we did for Tron (except that Tron was funded through a PTA grant). I say we stick with Junker because it would be too confusing not to, and make the old junker "oldjunker" or something similar (maybe even Tron)...but if we must have a new name for either one, then it should have something to do with us much more specifically than some random reference to a fictional drink from Star Trek...the original Junker, for example, got its name from being an old "junker" of Nathan's. --Tom 02:03, 2 March 2006 (EST)
Yeah, I agree that I think it should be called Junker as we have done with all new hardware since Nathan's original Junker. I'd like Miles or Adam to weigh in, Miles seemed to have a reason to want to run both in parallel instead of completely transferring to the new computer, but I wasn't able to figure it out. --Brian Jordan 13:56, 2 March 2006 (EST)
- The prospect of a new name sounds really exciting, but I honestly don't think we will ever agree on a new name. Plus, as simple as it is, Junker is a surprisingly good name. Also, I agree with the idea of keeping the old junker online and running in addition to the new one. I don't know about running them in "parallel", implying that they are both handling a good deal of load, but why not take advantage of more processing power and space to make our sites faster by keeping the old junker and using it to suppliment some of the server loads? Either way we should keep it to be at least a server to experiment on... --JSherman 14:32, 2 March 2006 (EST)
Keeping the name "Junker" is fine :-) --Mike Schneider 14:42, 2 March 2006 (EST)
