This article portrays Dr. L in a very negative way... --Mike Schneider 19:38, 11 February 2006 (EST)

I completely agree...in fact, I am embarrassed to have this article on the wiki. Justin Sherman and I have been working with him on a system that allows him to more easily announce school cancellations, and it would be a major embarrassment for the Computer Club if he were to see this article. This needs to be cleaned up ASAP...at the very least it needs to be balanced out with positive points. --Tom 22:16, 11 February 2006 (EST)

I made a few edits. I think that the article if 'OK' for now. --Mike Schneider 14:50, 12 February 2006 (EST)

I did a little more cleanup work myself, but also added another item to the list of controversial decisions. However, one specific question I have is the claim about cancelling ski trips...first of all, as I remember it, it used to be that the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders would go on the ski trip (5th graders didn't go because they went to Nature's Classroom), but that they stopped doing the ski trips because of the decision to send the 8th graders to Washington, DC for a week. At least for Coleytown...I don't know what the story was at Bedford back then...but in any case, it's not just some arbitrary decision, right? --Tom 18:24, 12 February 2006 (EST)

I don't know about Bedford (I went to Coleytown, too.) It is true though that he cancelled the Washington D.C. trip in 2002 (and ever since) due to "secuirity risks". It was replaced by a, in my (and most students') oppinion(s) very lame half-day bonding trip (a condensed Nature's Classroom.) That is all that I am going to say since he has just delclared a 2 hour delay :) --Mike Schneider 21:07, 12 February 2006 (EST)

No. The 2002 trip was cancelled due to 9/11. I seriously doubt he would have cancelled 2001's trip for anything, cause I recall it happening. 2003's trip (mine) was cancelled because of the newly-declared war in Iraq. When our nation is at war, the federal buildings in Washington are typically closed off to visitors, which defeated the purpose of going. However, in more recent years the trip actually has occured. Thank you for the Delay Dr. Landon!!!

(Adam: this is not yelling)

With all due respect, you should check your facts, Mr. Weiner. At least at Coleytown, the trip has not occurred since 2001 (as I incorrectly stated.) I was told by many administrators that the trip was cancelled due to a decission made by Dr. Landon. I would hate to think that he was used as a scape goat for a decision that he was not even involved in. Assuming that it was Dr. Landon that cancelled the trip, I would seriously doubt that the trip it has happened exclusively at Bedford. I would greatly appreciate it if a recent Bedford grad could confirm this (Justin???) --Mike Schneider 19:14, 13 February 2006 (EST)

1 more thing... To my knowledge, the trip took place later in the year (at least after September.) Wouldn't this mean that the 2001 trip (as well) was cancelled because of 9/11?

Yeah, I think you are right about this. 2008 graduates are telling me they didn't have it when they were 8th graders '03-'04. However, I do think they had it for the 2005 BMS graduates (SHS 2009).

Oh, and another thing. Ski trips were NOT ended to be replaced with the Washington trip. I can recall ski trips as recently as 2001, and the Washington trip has been going on since at least 1997. Weiner44408 22:13, 13 February 2006 (EST)

Coleytown didn't even start doing Washington DC trips until after I graduated 8th grade in 1999...I believe they started in 2000. From what I remember, the year that Coleytown started doing Washington DC trips was the same year that they stopped doing ski trips (my sister was still at Coleytown at the time). However, I think that Bedford was doing trips to Washington DC already, and was also doing ski trips, so I don't know what their story is.
Also, it is very rude for you to edit other people's words on a talk page...it's not the end of the world that you corrected an obvious typo I made, though it would seem that you changed the meaning of something Mike said, and that's inappropriate. Also, you need to sign your posts.

Yeah, sorry. But by Mike saying that a Washington trip occured in 2002 is a clear mistake. That was the trip cancelled by 9/11. Yes, the attacks occured in 2001 but by the time they happened the 2001 trip had long been history (five months before it). I remember in the summer of 1997 seeing water bottles with the "Royalties from this sale support the 8th grade trip to Washington, DC" so I know at least Bedford did the trip that long ago. This far off the topic-road we call "Elliott Landon" we should end this discussion here and focus on more important tasks in terms of improving the Wiki, as I'm about to do now. Weiner44408 22:13, 13 February 2006 (EST)

Ok... I have confirmed that the trip actually happened in 2001 at both schools (like you said, Mr. Weiner.) --Mike Schneider 21:58, 15 February 2006 (EST)

At the risk of being redundant, I would like to ultimately throw my two-cents in on this. Being class of 2009, I did not go to Washington D.C. as an 8th grader (in 2004-2005). It was cancelled due to security concerns after 9/11 and I believe that the current restriction is that field trips cannot leave the state of Connecticut anymore. That is all I know about this and don't know anything about any ski trips... However, I do know that if anyone is accusing Dr. Landon of unjustly canceling the Washington trip, that's ridiculous (in my opinion anyway). However, I can't even remember what the real issue was here... :) --JSherman 22:33, 15 February 2006 (EST)

Snow Days/Delays

The problem with the "Controversial Decisions" section is that most of it is about snowstorms and such where the contributor feels Dr. Landon didn't take the appropriate action. But most of them just sound whiny, without offering any facts on why school should have been canceled. It's not enough to just say "it snowed" or "there was a lot of snow"...one of them talks about school bus accidents and delays, which is reasonable, but most don't. The main factor in cancelling school has to do with whether it's safe to travel on the town's roads...if the roads are sufficiently clear, then you can't blame him for it. --Tom 19:55, 16 February 2006 (EST)
