The Wrecker
From Staples High Wiki
The Wrecker is the mascot for Staples High School. He is a caricature of a construction worker wearing a hard hat, who has arms as big a tree, and a chin to match! He holds a wrecking bar in his left hand and a sledgehammer in his right. He was designed by Staples graduate Tom Wall in 1980. The Wrecker was discontinued as of 2004, until a volunteer can be found. [1]
The "Wrecker" team name came into place during the 1920s after defeating Norwalk High School in football at its homecoming game, Norwalk High School having a winning streak at the time. Prior to this, the team name was known as the "Minutemen," a reference to Westport's role in the Revolutionary War.
