Tom Hessman (June 2005)

Tom used to be the President of the Computer Club, having held the title from 2001 until his graduation in 2003. He was actively involved in many aspects of the club, and oversaw Staples Online, the TV Announcement System, and various other sites and systems on Junker. He still helps with some technical aspects of Junker's administration, and still does some work for the various sites maintained by the Computer Club, such as the recent modification of the sports system to pull data from Schedule Star. He also works closely with Jim Honeycutt on various technology-related projects, as well as audio and video production.

Tom attended New York University for about three years, where he studied computer science, was the President of Computer Advocacy @ NYU, and a member of Free Culture @ NYU. He has recently transferred to the New York Institute of Technology, where he is studying Electronics and Information Security. He also interns for Ed Skoudis, a renowned Information Security consultant, SANS Instructor, and author, which provides Tom with a strong background in Information Security.

Tom's Staples Online Bio from July 2003

Tom has been a member of the Computer Club since his Freshman year, and never misses a meeting. In his Sophomore year, he took on a big project here on Staples on the Web: a dynamic, easy to maintain, sports system. Over the course of 2001 this project has become a reality, which can be found here. He has been working with the Athletic Director and led a workshop teaching Fall sports captains how to use the sports system to post scores. He hopes to have Winter and Spring captains using the system as well.

He also started taking on a webmaster role, fixing up minor things here and there, and adding a few things. Tom is now the head webmaster of this site. Tom is responsible for the updates to the General Info section, as well as the Faculty section. Tom created the new schedule section, where students and teachers can find upcoming modified schedules, the daily schedule, as well as old modified schedules dating back to 1999! Tom also created the Master Schedule System, where students and staff alike can view and manipulate the master schedule in more ways than ever before! Tom's major project for his Junior year was redesigning the back end of most of the site to be database driven so that it could easily be managed through a web-based system. This project has become a reality, allowing the webmasters of this site to update most of the content through the site itself. Part of this project was a new clubs system, which he hopes to get Staples clubs using in the 2002-2003 school year. Tom is also the head programmer of the TV System. His most visible contribution is the countdown to when buses leave at the end of the day, although he has also been working with its back end, fixing many minor issues and keeping it working.

In addition to his work on this website, Tom is also heavily involved in video & audio production. He has created many videos, including a short introduction to the Physical Education department for parents, and a short promotional video for the spring production of Into the Woods. He also filmed the opening night performance of Into the Woods on camera 3, and has filmed and edited the Spring Studio Theatre productions (As Bees In Honey Drown, California Suite, & The Importance of Being Earnest) as well as the Spring Combined Concert (camera 2). Tom also filmed the 2002 Graduation on camera 3, filmed Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Richter Park on camera 2, and operated both cameras 1 & 3 for a live I-net broadcast on using the Intel microscope. In addition to this short term work, Tom is working with the WWII Memories Group at the Westport Senior Center to produce a DVD containing clips of their speakers and their stories. He has finished the video itself, and hopes to have the DVD done by next year. Tom also participates in many recording sessions in the audio studio, and is helping produce this year's Candlelight Concert CD.

Tom is a senior now, and is still the head webmaster of this site. One of his most important tasks this year is to train younger students how to maintain this website once he is gone. Tom is also working on a website for the media lab here at Staples, which he hopes to have done by February. Tom is a member of the executive board of WWPT, Staples' FM radio station, and is still heavily involved in media production at Staples. Tom helps with Staples' two weekly shows, the North Avenue News and Staples Sports Scoreboard. Tom is also the director of Video Yearbook, and has been helping with material for the radio production course.

Tom is a very busy guy!

This section makes many references to "this site" which in fact are references to Staples Online, and also makes references to things that are "in progress" or otherwise had just been completed or were about to be...that information is all as of the 2002-2003 school year (my Senior year at Staples). This is a backup copy of my profile I made on July 2003 before altering it, it's not "as of" July 2003.
