Computer club has come to a consensus: one should no longer have to log in to simply view a page. -- Akrell 06:28, 14 Jun 2005 (EDT)

I have read the message and have met the demands. However, I still wonder what you mean by a consensus. Does you mean that Computer Club actually voted and agreed that this should be changed? Was it unanimous? Jsherman
It seems everyone (except you, geoff?, and I) doesn't think one should have to log in to view. The problem is the school computers, which can't hold cookies, so one is going to have to log on to the site every time one goes on a school computer. (unless you can figure out how to do that automatically based upon their username). I personally don't mind logging in but Miles, Alexandra, John, Chouggy, and Mr. Rogers disagree. -- Akrell 06:28, 14 Jun 2005 (EDT)
As I said, I did "fix" it. However, I think that if we make the users login to view pages, we will make more people sign up. Since more people need to sign up, and more people do sign up, more people will most likely edit and add to the wiki. This will be much better for the wiki as we want to aquire a large user base. Also, I'm not sure if you are right about school computers not retaining cookies. Assuming you know some stuff about PHP, the wiki uses PHP sessions to store logins, which in this case do require cookies. However, I was able to use another site I made that uses a similar method to keep people logged in, on a school computer, and it seemed to work fine. Once Miles gets Nathan to work his "voo-doo" on the DNS servers so that the school computers can access the wiki, I will test it, but I think it will work. Anyway, be in touch, and I think Geoff and I may be able to come to CC on friday. That reminds me, do you know what time the library closes on Friday, as I know you guys get out of school at like 12:30. Thanks, Justin.
I happen to agree with you, however, the wiki is not controlled by us alone, the community votes, and the comunity has decided against us.
School computers may retain cookies, but one would still have to log into the wiki everytime he logged into a computer. I will check what time the library closes. -- Akrell 06:43, 15 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Why can't "always render PNG" be the default? but congratulations anyway miles explained the summer meetings idea, i'm all for it... what are your thoughts? -- Akrell 20:09, 16 Jun 2005 (EDT)

I'll answer both questions. Firstly, even if I did make the default setting "always render PNG", it would only affect users that were registered after I did that. Secondly, I dont think that there is anyway to change the default for that particular option, I did check. :) Also, I dont know exactly what you mean by summer meetings, at least not the details, although I would probably agree anyway. :) I also found out that Geoff and I will be getting back from our field trip tomorrow (Friday) at about 2:30. I originally heard that was when the library may have been closing. So, what is the final verdict for cc tomorrow? Are we having it, and when will it start and end? -- Jsherman 23:06, 16 Jun 2005
Right after writing the previous paragraph, I looked into the default math option a little more carefully and figured it out. It should be fixed, but it still will only affect users registered after I changed it. We may want to test it by making a test user account. If you do so, just post the username of the test user account when you are done testing and I'll delete it. -- Jsherman 23:19, 16 Jun 2005 (EDT)

great work

Hey, just checking up on our wiki, I've been very busy and haven't had a chance to work on it. Its great, however, that you are indeed working and working hard... Keep up the great work! -- Akrell 21:28, 19 Jul 2005 (EDT)

incorrect labeling of stubs

An article isn't a stub if its empty, it shouldn't be created in the first place... See here for a loose guideline on what should be labeled as such... Good effort though! -- Akrell 15:32, 23 Jul 2005 (EDT)

Hi

I got your message. Thx for the heads up. The Staples Page is fixed (image and all). I was just reading a section of Wiki... "Administrators, sometimes referred to as System Operators, are users that are allowed to do things that regular users are not allowed to do. Most of the people in the Staples Computer Club are system operators, and use their privileges to manage and monitor this wiki. If you wish, you can view a list of all administrators." So... how about making me a sysop? Anyway, just asking. Have a nice weekend. I intend to post a few more articles.

Mike

I thought you may enjoy this:

I just finished a new section called About Us. Check it out!

1 Quick Question

Hi. I was editing the Staples_High_Wiki:About page and noticed that Tom was listed as one of the administrators. I was just curious if he still is (having graduated and all). If he is no longer one, please remove him from the page so that no questions from contributors are sent to him once we launch Thanks!

--Mike 19:18, 29 October 1005 BCE (EDT)

1 more quick question

Hi again. I was wondering if we should delete the birthday template on the Main Page. I worry that it will confuse people after launch. Feel free to delete the section (or tell me that you are going to fix it in your spare time (ha ha) :) Anyway, I am of couse fine with Tom being on the Admin page (not that my imput really matters- at least to certain people). Anyway.. I just wanted to be sure that he was fine with getting questions on his disussion page about how to use the Sandbox.

Maybe we should have redirects for all teachers such as Mr. Zito to Mike Zito. -- Akrell 08:51, 10 November 2005 (EST)

categorization

We (hardcore users) need to do some serious work on the categories. Ideally we should have a category Staff, Teachers, Math Teachers etc. If this were done we could remove that list on the main page of all articles (something which makes vandalism more severe because it is more easily viewable... maybe?). -- Akrell 09:03, 10 November 2005 (EST)

DST Error

Hi. I know that you are going to be busy this weekend with the play and stuff :) I just noticed that all time stamps are one hour off due to daylight savings time. If you could fix this, I would apreciate it. --Mike 15:38, 12 November 2005 (EST)

So much done

I went on a total wikifest yesterday. It rocked! I wrote a lot of stuff (as you saw) :).

Hi!

Hi! There are almost 100 users on the Wiki. Wow.

Cache Problems

As I was looking through some pages just now that I edited last night, I noticed that I appeared to be logged in (based on the links at the top right), even though I wasn't! If I clicked links that would require me to be logged in it would acknowledge I wasn't, and articles I hadn't touch last night didn't have the problem. At first I thought it was a Firefox bug, not deleting my cookies (though I had trouble believing that since I always log out anyway), but it wasn't. It then occurred to me that it was a cache issue: Firefox had cached the page last night, and since it believed it hasn't changed since then (it hasn't techincally), it served me the cached version, even though the cached version was from when I was logged in and I currently wasn't.

Long story short, this is a problem...dynamic pages shouldn't be cached, so something isn't right. This could especially be a probelm in environments where shared proxies are used (since many cache), such as school, or AOL.

-Tom

More on Cache

There may be a configuration setting somewhere, which I was hoping you may know of. Otherwise, there are certain headers we send to browsers to make sure that they don't use cached version. These four cover all possibilities:

header ("Last-Modified: " . gmdate("D, d M Y H:i:s") . " GMT");
header ("Expires: Mon, 26 Jul 2000 05:00:00 GMT");
header ("Cache-Control: no-cache");
header ("Pragma: no-cache");

Let me know if you figure anything out... -Tom

New Users!!!

I don't know if you noticed, but we do not have 1, not 2, but an amazing 3 new users! This makes a grand total of about 110. That article in Inklings must have had a big effect like we thought it would...

--Mike 18:01, 22 December 2005 (EST)

1 more user!

We now have 111 users! Yahoo!!! This project is growing by the minute. I say that we give the 112th a free car and a life time supply of dog biscuits (we can through in Geoff, too :)) . So... about that Westport Wiki....

Image for Computer Club Article

Good point (about the scan being more reputable than a PDF.) The PDF version can simply be reached off of a link in the inklings section. I think that the scan would look great as the picture for this month's featured article. Truly, there are not many other alternatives... save Nathan's Kangaroo (anyone viewing this outside of the Computer Club: don't ask- trust me on this one.) Anyway, the scan would be a great image for the article. Perhaps next-month's article can be the new Junker (whatever it is called.) Perhaps we could have a place for people to submit names for the new server.

Blank Articles

I understand your point. Content will be added ASAP. For now, I am going to wait for Adam (hopefully you have taken time to look at this, too Adam) to look at "his" Wiki and ask me to remove them. Since this is unlikely, I guess the articles will just remain as templates for now. :)

I agree that the articles that I stubbed do not fit the traditional definition- and I agree with all of the other points that you made as well :-) Could you add a template (just for temporary use) that says that "this article is blank, please help by adding to it" or something like that. Tell me what you think. By the way, check your EChalk. --Mike Schneider 11:41, 11 February 2006 (EST)

I only nominated Elliott Landon for speedy deletion because it was an article that he would have been appalled to see and embarrasment to the Wiki, so I wanted to have it destroyed fast, though recreated in a more constructive way. But I think its fine the way it is for now. Weiner44408 15:32, 12 February 2006 (EST)

AfD template color

I would rather have yellow as the background, since I think that it best follows the type of situation it depicts. Typically, yellow means warning, and red means critical. It makes it fitting for yellow to mean possible deletion, and red meaning imminent deletion (hence CSD). Weiner44408 18:35, 14 February 2006 (EST)

About "Staples High School" title redundancies

Yeah, it is kind of controversial, but at the same time its easy to fix with the "move page" feature. I'd leave it to some debate, but I think you are right about this. Weiner44408 16:41, 18 February 2006 (EST)

Yeah, I think that'd be a good idea. By the way, after all the time I spent uploading snapshots of yearbook covers, I hope it pays off on the Staples Yearbook page. However, they are all quite large (between 2 and 8 MB in size). I'm deciding whether or not they have to be re-uploaded at a lower pixel dimension size. Weiner44408 16:49, 18 February 2006 (EST)

Another mistake...

In an effort of categorizing buildings, I accidentally created Categories:Areas within Staples High School. Please delete. Weiner44408 17:00, 18 February 2006 (EST)

About the Yearbook photos you shrunk in size

I toyed around with them for a while, and I determined that 225px was the best size for them. Considering that you made them smaller, that would mean that it would be a waste of lines to do so, unless I was to go through the tedious work of adding extra rows to accomodate smaller image sizes.

I reverted your edit; if you have any objections about it please talk to me; perhaps we can agree on an appropriate image size for those photos. Weiner44408 19:11, 25 February 2006 (EST)

About the Wikipedia Vandalism investigation with the Staples IP

Regarding your attempts to track down the students who vandalized Wikipedia using the school's IP (64.251.53.130). I think that since no formal warning was issued about it in annoucements, I don't think it is right for a handful of students to receive school consequences for what they did on Wikipedia.

Perhaps Rob Rogers should send a note through eChalk explaining about it, and warning whoever was doing so to stop. Since there hasn't been anything like that done yet, I think you shouldn't get those students in trouble as of yet.

I do have to admit that Wikipedia vandalism is violating the Acceptable Use Agreement, but since no permanent damage was done it shouldn't be taken all that seriously, although should still be regarded.

Thanx. Weiner44408 09:28, 4 March 2006 (EST)

I got your reply, and while you (and/or your colleagues here) said that it requires human power to clean up vandalism on Wikipedia, it does. But I would not say that it requires much work at all just to go to the vandalized page's "History" column and click on the Administrator-exclusive option for the last legitimate version to "roll it back" to that version. It is very easy to do and because there are 690 admins on Wikipedia (think I counted right), so no individual admin has to devote such amounts of time to this. Yes, I think it is wrong and tampering with an encyclopedia.

About your comments regarding warnings, it is true that the talk page for 64.251.53.130 has received numerous warnings, but many of the students who vandalized it didn't read them, and additionally those warnings did not come from the school's administration.

To end this, answer this question: Regarding the entire collection of students who were vandalizing Wikipedia from school, what should the students themselves do about this?

A. They are not in hot water yet, but should stop their actions immediately to alleviate the problem, even though the school's IP has been blocked already for two months.

B. There is not a guarantee, but a possibility they may be caught for their actions. They should definitely stop their actions immediately in light of the fact that it is being administratively investigated, and to make sure they know what they could have done for themselves.

C. It is too late for them. It is only a matter of time before they are rounded up by administration and charged. All they can do from here is make sure they learned their lesson and hope they can rebuild their image afterwards.

Weiner44408 14:21, 5 March 2006 (EST)

Response

Well I am sorry for putting you through all of this, maybe cause I am worried about possibly being caught. I do admit I made a few of the vandal edits (I don't know exactly which ones, I'll take a closer look). But there definitely were a fair number of those vandal edits I did not do.

Regarding what I said about the fact that students who vandalize from school don't see the warnings; yes, I know there is a patent "You Have New Messages" sign when they are issued, but it will only be there until just one student clicks it, and since there are 1,500 students using the school's IP it isn't likely that the last vandal on it would actually have seen it.

I admit I've been asking a lot of you, and I think its time to give a break on this for a while.

About Staples High School: 120 Years of A Plus Education

I understand that you had the need to move the article to a better title. However, Wikimedia parameters seem to prohibit some of the characters that the title should contain (i.e. +, :, etc.) so it has been a struggle trying to get around this. Weiner44408 11:46, 12 March 2006 (EST)

A few requests

1. Have a look at the CSD-nominated "Studios" article; I moved its content to Staples Players. 2. Update the main page, removing "Urinetown", as its shows have already passed.

Thanx --Weiner44408 20:46, 22 March 2006 (EST)

Voice of sanity!

I see the latest comment you wrote (with User:Mschneider and that I seem to be on the verge of being permanently banned from editing this wiki. I must say that it was kind of crossing the line to add a link to an inappropriate page (as I did on the Library article about the security flaw), but just think about how I'd feel, considering all the work I've done for this Wiki to be permanently banned from it. And about made-up words like "deprovement"; that is a minor mistake that need no disciplinary action taken.

Sometimes I am not perfect and some information I submit may not be correct, so maybe in the future I should verify the facts more carefully.

Being banned here, I would not only feel that all my work here would be "undone", but I would really fall into depression from my inability to express one of my strengths at school. Vandalism on a wiki is usually declared as "a deliberate attempt to reduce the quality of it". Obviously with this case it would be reducing the quality but nontheless did I actually mean to do so. I hope you take my word for this and know what you could do to me by taking such "cruel and unusual punishment".

Thanx. --Weiner44408 23:35, 24 March 2006 (EST)

Based on the last comment you wrote to me, I thank you for your respect and understanding. By talking about permanent bans, I am referring to the message now at the top of my user page reading:

This is your Last warning. The next time you vandalize a page, you will be permanently blocked from editing the Staples High Wiki.

I have wealths of knowledge about Staples, and this wiki is my one and only method of using it. Thanx once again for your consideration.

--Weiner44408 09:19, 25 March 2006 (EST)

Cool tip

If you need to edit a page in such a way that a given phrase that is repeated throughout needs to be changed to something else, you should take the whole article's content, paste it in a Microsoft Word document, and then use "Ctrl + F" to change a given phrase to something else. Then take the content in Word and replace the article you are editing with it. I just did that to create links to the Demolition article on the 2003-2006 construction page, as the word appears 11 times in it and it saves a lot of it. --Weiner44408 17:26, 25 March 2006 (EST)

Zach Weiner

I put a CSD on this article. You should take a look. --Weiner44408 12:20, 11 May 2006 (EDT)

I really hate to open up this subject of debate again, but can you please remind me our exact reason for not having student pages? Yes, there would be the risk of inapproprate content. However, if that were to be monitored, I wouldn't see trouble in having an article for each student, provided that we had some way of getting the person's permission before an article is started. Perhaps we could only allow pages to be started under the students name and we could send a message through e-Chalk asking for his or her permission. Just a thought. I realize that this is a difficult issue to make an absolute decission on...we don't want to end up with the Staples High MySpace... Anyway, the reason that I raise this issue is that I have received numerous questions from students of all shapes, ages and sizes about whether or not they could have pages on themselves. When I nicely told them, "absolutely not", they seemed to lose intrest in the wiki altogether. In order for the SHS wiki to work, perhaps we have to give in a little bit to the giant ego that so many Westport students possess. Again, Just a thought. --Mike Schneider 23:42, 11 May 2006 (EDT)

I understand your point. I think we should make it very clear that people can have pages about themselves but they need to be on their user page instead of in the main namespace. As of right now, that's the only restriction were are enforcing... Besides that, people can feel free to write about themselves here, just in the right place :) --JSherman 08:30, 12 May 2006 (EDT)

The wiki seems to be dead...again

So it looks like yet again the hype (if you even want to call it that) for the SHS wiki has once again died down and about one to two people are signing in every day. Looks like its time to go to plan b, if you haven't already: talk to guidance (both middle school and high school if possible) and get all incoming freshman registered. They could probably actually benefit from this information. The class of '10 is our only hope! --Mike Schneider 11:38, 21 May 2006 (EDT)
