From Staples High Wiki
History of Staples Page
Mike, what you've written for the History of Staples Page is awesome. I love the picture too. However, there is already a page on Staples High School, and a History section in it. I think you should add/merge what you've put in your own article into the History Section on the Staples High School article. You should also put the picture there. Also, so you know, you have a user page, whose "article's" name is User:Schneider9519 and this is your talk page which is at User_talk:Schneider9519. If you post something on someone's user talk page, like I'm doing, it will show up as a new "message" for them. If you want to respond, post your reponse in a new section (click the + button instead of the edit button, which is right next to the edit button), on my talk page User_talk:Jsherman. Great job with all the pages!

work thus far
First of all, excellent work so far! I really appreciate the quantity and quality of your contributions to the wiki in such a short period of time, its truly great.
I hope you enjoy your new sysop priveleges. I noticed that instead of deleted pages you were simply blanking them, now you have the ability to delete them properly (just don't be too eager). Now for the tips, its mostly minor stuff, but they're good practices:
- Try to rewrite everything you put on the wiki, even if you get it from another Staples page or even from another page on the wiki.
- Comment your edits, i.e. write a descriptive edit summary for every edit you make.
- You might've figured this one out: put the source for images on the image page; put the source for text at the bottom of the article under ==References==.
- Don't upload pictures without using them on a page, i.e. Image:Numberpic.jpg
- Notice the mathematics curriculum template I created for Geometry, use that type of thing, they're great!
- Look at my edits, my formatting techniques etc. I am a Wikipedia nut and know my way around a wiki quite well.
Anyways, thats just really nitpicky stuff, I can't say it enough: great work, keep it up! -- Akrell 22:25, 17 September 2005 (EDT)
image uploading
Image uploading is great, as long as you're not breaking copyright laws. If you do upload images, be sure to provide a source and get permission to use them. I've had to tag Image:Frown-front.jpg and Image:NERDS1.jpg both as possible copyright violations and they will be deleted unless you can justify their presence. Put references in all of your articles so we know where the info came from. Put the image source on the image description page, etc...
Also, where did you get all of the old staples pictures, and Image:Numberpic.jpg make sure those aren't copyrighted either, or they will have to be deleted, (check every image you've uploaded). Otherwise, good work! -- Akrell 07:57, 18 September 2005 (EDT)
A few things...
Be careful about editing/creating other people's user pages. As they are not actual wiki "content" it really doesn't matter if there are speeling mistakes there, useless junk, or anything. The only time that you absolutely should modify them is if there is inappropriate content, in which case they should also probably be banned, which I will explain to you in person at some point. :) Just a heads up as I don't think Miles would be too happy about you creating a user page for him. :)
Also, I was just curious if you intentionally made the text in the link to your name on the About page Mschneider instead of your actual name. I was going to change it but decided you may have done it on purpose. Just wondering... :)
I also wanted to thank you. You've been putting a ton of work into writing articles and it shows. You're doing a really good job!

response to the disclaimer questions
My neatly ordered answers to your neatly ordered questions:
- They should be separate templates.
- Soon... as soon as I'm back on my feet (haha)
- I was not in school on Friday because I was seeing an orthopedist about a stress fracture of a metatarsal of mine.
RE: Quick Question
Mike,
Tom graduated 3 years ago so he was not at Staples when we came up with the Staples High Wiki idea last year. :)
Yes, he is an official administrator, but I agree that people shouldn't direct questions towards him, really mainly because he is so busy and sleep deprived most of the time. :) However, I'll keep him as a sysop, but if he starts getting a ton of stuff about the wiki, then we'll take him off the admin list. :)
-Justin
for release
OK, I've just done a bit of cleaning up of the polices and intro and such and here's what I think should be done ASAP:
- Clarification of the purpose of the wiki. Information to help students about the school, organizations, events etc. Not a message board.
- Make it easier to contact us (admins) with questions and help. Put a page for questions of admins from the community portal??
-- Akrell 42:42, 42 October 42 (EST)
categorization
We (hardcore users) need to do some serious work on the categories. Ideally we should have a category Staff, Teachers, Math Teachers etc. If this were done we could remove that list on the main page of all articles (something which makes vandalism more severe because it is more easily viewable... maybe?). -- Akrell 09:01, 10 November 2005 (EST)
Re: Thanks
Mike,
Please accept my apologies for being a bit too harsh and know that I don't hate you. While I'll admit I do often take things too personally (and especially things involving Computer Club lately), it was almost warranted in this case since it involves the history of the club, and in fact as a member of the Computer Club you should be somewhat offended as well about the error in our history, at least if it wasn't you who had made the error... (c;=
Please also know that I'm generally not a "mean" person, as I'm sure Justin will tell you, and that there have been outside factors influencing my mood this week. I did not intend to come off so harsh, but it was the best way I could word it at the time. The point was that as the primary editor of a repository of information, you should have a lot of "journalistic integrity" and have a strong certainty that you are publishing accurate information. Everyone makes mistakes, so I'll forgive you if you can forgive me.
Have a good weekend,
-Tom
First of all, I like the "new" main page. It looks cool and I think it was time for a change! Maybe it will make more people use the wiki! :)
Also, I wanted to ask you about the Inklings article scan. I purposely scanned in the article and uploaded it instead of just using the PDF, because the fact that it was obviously printed in a newspaper is more reputable than just an image of some text or something. Feel free to upload the PDF too, but I don't think that it should replace the scanned image. Any thoughts on this or where the PDF should go? --JSherman 16:03, 1 January 2006 (EST)
Various things :)
Mike, I agree with everything you said (to sum it up). I was also considering using, maybe the Computer Club article's talk page to have CC discuss/vote on a name, but maybe we should open it up to the whole Staples Wiki Community (like that's a lot people...) Also, did you notice the wiki go down just a few minutes ago for a second or two? I just updated it to the newest version, 1.5.4 (we were running 1.5.3). By the way, you can check the version at Special:Version. I also fixed the featured article summary thing on the main page to reference an article called Staples High Wiki:Featured/January_2006 (it automatically looks for the one with the current month and year) so if you want to mess with it or anything, you can find them there. I just copied the first paragraph from the CC article after doing a tiny bit of work. We should start working on a working demo / beginning of the Westport Wiki so we can have something to show the official people we want to approve it what it would be like. --JSherman 22:09, 1 January 2006 (EST)
Images Uploads
Image uploads are now working as you can see by the I uploaded. :) It broke when I updated the wiki and was very easy to fix. --JSherman 01:30, 2 January 2006 (EST)Blank articles
Last time I created a bunch of blank articles and labeled them as stubs, Adam told me I shouldn't have done that. (You can see exactly what he said on my user talk page). I think that those articles should be deleted unless they are going to have actual content soon. However, I wont delete them unless you think we should. --JSherman 18:36, 3 January 2006 (EST)
Redirects
Mike, We need to figure out a psuedo-standard for teacher articles. It has already been "decided" that the name of an article for a teacher shouldn't be Mr. Zito, or Dr. K, but instead their full name. I'm not quite sure that we need 6 or 7 redirect pages for any given teacher though :) This is definitely up for debate, and I'll try to ask Adam what he thinks. :) What are your thoughts? --JSherman 17:06, 4 January 2006 (EST)
Wikify template
Mike, I found the wikify template on Wikipedia, copied it and modified it. It is located at Template:Wikify obviously. :) I also may be updating the wiki later tonight, so it may be down for as much as 30 minutes. After I'm done, tell me if you find anything wrong with it (ie. image uploads not working :) ) if you are still awake... --JSherman 18:58, 13 January 2006 (EST)
Saying "Bye Bye you piece of crap" as a deletion summary
Yes, I do have to agree that the article was quite unnecessary, but by saying "Bye Bye you piece of crap" may make the article's creator, James Moore, feel offended. I ask that you maintain a respectable atmosphere here, just like on Wikipedia. Thanks Weiner44408 15:33, 27 January 2006 (EST).
Mike,
The TV System is hosted on Junker (at tv.stapleshigh.net). Channel 78, most of the time, is just a "screenshot" of a computer on that site. It seems as though the network went out at school recently (sometime after wednesday), causing the browser to not be able to find the site when it reloaded. Tom has a system set up for fixing this over the internet, but has not given me the password for it yet, otherwise I would fix it myself. I can do that on Monday though if neither of us fixes it from home... Thanks for the heads up! --JSherman 12:50, 28 January 2006 (EST)
Thanks for the tip Mike! I could have sworn that it was removed already...(c:= --Tom 16:14, 4 February 2006 (EST)
Mike, I've gotten a lot of Inklings' new website done. Contact me on my talk page.
I've gotten a rough, but very complete design done. I will show Rexford on Monday and have him make suggestions, but you can see it now at jsherman.junker.org/iotw
About that repeating "one tip"
Sorry for all of this, but I really really have to admit that it is a lot more convenient if it is done that way. I'll change that if you want me to. Weiner44408 23:14, 5 February 2006 (EST)
- I hate to admit it, but I sort of agree. It's more like a discussion that way, where a person can see the whole conversation, including exactly who is replying to what, in one place, whereas one would otherwise have to go back and forth between two potentially disorganized talk pages. The only thing that makes it more convenient the other way, IMO, is that you get notified upon logging in to the wiki that you have "new messages". But seeing as how I tend to just go straight to Recent Changes and only log in when I want to edit something, I don't find that aspect convenient. Perhaps the policy should be something along the lines of someone starting the conversation about something on the page of the person they are starting the conversation with, but then having the conversation continue on the same page, at least for semi-long and detailed things? Obviously for things that are more personal it makes sense to do it the other way...and I suppose it makes more sense to have some of these discussions (like the one on the Michael Mulligan article) on the article's discussion page, but if you are replying to a specific change made by a specific person what guarantee do you have that they will look at that article's talk page? I suppose we could have the policy be to write on someone's talk page with a request to look at the article's discussion page...(c;= --Tom 18:14, 6 February 2006 (EST)

civility
Please be more civil on the Wiki. Maintain a calm tone, don't yell, use appropriate language and make no personal attacks. Thank you. -- Akrell 20:41, 7 February 2006 (EST)
- My User page being 1 meg long- yeah that was a bit over the top, but general civility??? Bad language??? Yelling? I am curious to know how one can actually "yell" through text. If you are hearing voices while using the Staples High Wiki, I would reccommend that you take a break: get a drink of water, go for a walk, Whatever.
- This is NOT Yelling!!!
- --Mike Schneider 19:14, 8 February 2006 (EST)
- I must say, the formatting of your comments is very hard to read; please follow general wiki standards when writing on talk pages. I've taken the liberty of minimally restructuring your comments so that such discussions may be navigated more easily.
- I assumed you did not know about the length of your userpage, I should scold you if you did. Concerning your civility, I ask that you use less punctuation in general; triple question marks or exclamation points are not nice to read, are patronizing and make you seem immature at the same time.
- Calling articles "crap" or saying they "suck" is simply not necessary. I hope I need say no more on that subject. And yes, in addition to your excessive punctuation, which can be demeaning, please don't type in all capital letters, "On Internet chat systems and Usenet, typing in all capitals is interpreted as shouting and/or yelling."[1]. It hurts my eyes and expresses an angry tone which should not be present on this wiki. I hope you understand my point of view. -- Akrell 20:47, 8 February 2006 (EST)

Weinz wiki
I already have WeinzWorld, and I feel that a Wiki for myself isn't really necessary. I already have this Wiki to contribute to anyways. Thanks for the tip, and I will fill in a lot of those details that you suggested to me when I have time. Weiner44408 09:05, 11 February 2006 (EST)
incorrect labeling of stubs
Mike, I wanted to share with you something that Adam posted on my user talk page a while ago: "An article isn't a stub if its empty, it shouldn't be created in the first place... See here for a loose guideline on what should be labeled as such... Good effort though!" I agree with those statements. :) However, the empty pages you made shouldn't be deleted because they hopefully will have some content at some point; I think that we should just add content to them ASAP... (You may want to look at the short pages list) --JSherman 11:04, 11 February 2006 (EST)

Monkey pictures
I know you said "don't delete this", but this image isn't on your user page anymore. In fact, it's used nowhere on the wiki... surprisingly enough (Image:Monkey_pictures_3.jpg) Do you actually need this? :) --JSherman 22:49, 16 February 2006 (EST)
Staples High School on Wikipedia
I was just wondering why the link to the wiki goes to westport.k12.ct.us. I assumed it was a mistake, but didn't change it in case there was a reason behind it. Can I change it? --JSherman 10:28, 18 February 2006 (EST)

Is it okay if I take off your signature on your message on the top of the Main Page:Talk article? I'd like to edit it and turn it into a description of what that talk page is for, but I'm not supposed to do that with signed comments. Thanks. --Brian Jordan 20:49, 26 February 2006 (EST)

Mike Schneider
I'm going to suggest deletion of Mike Schneider only because it's the kind of thing that wouldn't fly on the regular Wikipedia. --Brian Jordan 20:19, 1 March 2006 (EST)
404 Error Page
I restored the deletion of the 404 Error page. I assume you were unaware of this, but that is actually used as a custom error page for any 404 errors in the wiki directory of this site. Therefore, going to a non-existant page will display that page. The interesting thing is that most "invalid" pages will be considered an "uncreated" page by MediaWiki and that page won't be shown. Anyway, it should not have been removed, at least not without changes to code on Junker first. I think it was a somewhat innovative idea, better than the bleak normal error page, but the location of it is up for debate. Obviously, putting something like that in the main namespace would be a bad idea, but maybe it should be an unlisted special page instead of just an article page in the project (Staples_High_Wiki:) namespace. Anyway, not a big deal.. just wanted to explain why it's there. --JSherman 14:43, 2 March 2006 (EST)
Deleted Pages
While some pages like Dr K can really be deleted immediately, I think that others, such as The Thrope Scope should not have been deleted without at least consensus reached on it's talk page about a deletion. I don't have a distinct opinion about whether or not it should remain yet, but someone else might. Maybe we should start a discussion about its deletion. --JSherman 15:46, 2 March 2006 (EST)
Yeah, you guys need to be careful about deleting pages without getting a few opinions first. A lot of the stuff on this wiki, such as Hornets and The Thrope Scope are from before the class of 2009 came to Staples. Just becuase you haven't heard of something doesn't make it speedy-deletable. Putting it up for AfD is certainly reasonable, though. --Brian Jordan 18:15, 2 March 2006 (EST)
Okay, okay.

Images
Do you really need 6 images of a monkey uploaded and on your user page? Also, again I would take a look at the list of unused files... you've only uploaded 4 images that haven't been used (excluding the monkey), but the picture of a music note that was probably copied from a clip art gallery probably doesn't need to be here, does it? --JSherman 19:31, 4 March 2006 (EST)
In response to your comment you most recently wrote
To answer your question on where I get these photos: Yearbooks, Yearbooks and more yearbooks, and a scanner to digitize images. I have about 17 of them in my room, and for the ones I don't have there is an area in the Westport Public Library that has tons of them. I can't take those out, but my camera can do the work for me instead of scanning. I've also used Staples High School 120 years of A Plus education from time to time. You are right, I never actually knew the exact year Inklings started, but I estimated.

New details
Now it's your turn to be critiqued on facts. You recently restored the December 2005 issue of Inklings (not the best move, but OK). But you said December 2006 in its caption. Watch your edits next time.

Well I don't think I cannot edit the Inklings article. Yes, I do admit I exaggerated a little about that type-o of yours, but its ok; I've made errors as great as computing 3 x 3 = 6 on a Math quiz in 8th grade. Take a look at this to get an idea.
Let's just get on with this; I will try to re-verify my facts for next time.

A voice of sanity
I see the latest comment you wrote (with User:Jsherman and that I seem to be on the verge of being permanently banned from editing this wiki. I must say that it was kind of crossing the line to add a link to an inappropriate page (as I did on the Library article about the security flaw), but just think about how I'd feel, considering all the work I've done for this Wiki to be permanently banned from it. And about made-up words like "deprovement"; that is a minor mistake that need no disciplinary action taken.
Sometimes I am not perfect and some information I submit may not be correct, so maybe in the future I should verify the facts more carefully.
Being banned here, I would not only feel that all my work here would be "undone", but I would really fall into depression from my inability to express one of my strengths at school. Vandalism on a wiki is usually declared as "a deliberate attempt to reduce the quality of it". Obviously with this case it would be reducing the quality but nontheless did I actually mean to do so. I hope you take my word for this and know what you could do to me by taking such "cruel and unusual punishment".
Thanx. --Weiner44408 23:36, 24 March 2006 (EST)
Coleytalk
Well I did hear the term "Coleytalk" used at several times. Please note I never attended Coleytown Middle School. --Weiner44408 18:15, 5 April 2006 (EDT)
Please be more serious
When discussing what the May 2006 featured article should be, stop mentioning Ontario. It was funny once but its not now that you are continuing to do it. This isn't vandalism, but it is not mature behavior on the wiki either. Please start being a little more serious. Thanx --Weiner44408 21:42, 24 April 2006 (EDT)
- Well what I meant to do in that case was list the provinces of Canada that I've been do. If you notice there, "Ontario" is indented, meaning that it is intended to be put under Canada. Sorry for the confusion --Weiner44408 20:15, 25 April 2006 (EDT)
