Y-drive
From Staples High Wiki
A y-drive is the common name for a student or staff member's file storage space on the school network. Everyone's y-drive is stored on the main server for the school that they currently attend. It is simply an invisible network share used as the user's home directory on the Windows server, and mounted as a network drive. It is mounted by a login batch script as drive Y: upon log in to school computers, which is how it got its name. A Y-drive account is required for anyone to log on to a Westport Public Schools computer - a Y-drive can also be frozen if a user violates the Acceptable User Agreement.
In addition to school computers, y-drives can also be accessed from anywhere with an Internet connection through the Official Y-Drive Access Site, created as part of the WLN by Nathan Faber, or through the Y-Drive2 Access Site, created by Miles Lubin (based on an open source project). Users of Junker can also access their y-drives directly using smbclient.
As of the 2006-2007 school year, the y-drives from Bedford Middle School and Coleytown Middle School were moved over to a new y-drive server at Staples in order to consolidate them. The new Y-drive server has an overall capacity of 2.72 terabytes, or around 3 trillion bytes. As of September 2006, only 13.7% of the server's space is used (about 382 GB). Due to these server changes, the original y-drive website made by Nathan Faber as part of the WLN no longer works. However, Ydrive2 has been updated for the changes.
